Yes, the summer street fairs and carnivals are here, and Dan will be showing windows, doors, photos, and new colors at the Highland Square street fair next weekend, June 18, 2011.  Dan has been doing this for 13 years now, and the fair gets bigger and more attended each of those years.

Always a blast, with 3 stages of music, lots of food and drink, and a beer garden in the center of it all.  It goes from 10am- 10pm that day, rain or shine!

The other intrusion (cold coming in in winter and heat coming in during summer are eternal problems) to our homes is NOISE!  And energy efficient windows are also great for keeping out the sounds that are ever- increasing in our world .

Many questions on the status of Federal Tax credits for windows, insulation, siding, doors, and even water heaters.

Here are some highlights:

• If you have taken the maximum tax credit in any year, you aren’t eligible for more.  It is not a per year credit,  when you have gotten the max, you are done.
• Window tax credits in 2011  are a $200 maximum, with a legal way to apply for up to a total of $500 if certain requirements are met.
• Look at www.energystar.gov for details on the current tax credits.
• Insulated siding, some insulated roofing systems, doors, storm doors, and water heaters are eligible,  ($300 on water heaters alone!)
• Make SURE you buy products whose performance meets the tax credit requirements (not every window, door, siding or other product is good)

Take care to get a good qualified contractor that is knowledgeable in these tax credit stats.

Dan the Window Man is now an EPA certified trained company for the new RRP lead paint ruling, enacted on April 22, Earth Day 2010.

Dan and company is able to test for lead paint and has the training and certification to contain the dust if lead paint is found present in the home.

Consider this as a new requirement (each remodeler working on your home needs to test for lead paint in the areas they will be disturbing paint in)  if you own a home built within the year 1976 or before, for not only windows and doors, but for any project that disturbs more than 6 sq.ft inside the home.

The amount and location of lead based paint in our homes built prior to 1979 will cost us in time, money, and jobs.
I speak of the soon-to-be enforcing of the EPA lead based paint containment rule called the RRP ruling (renovation, remodel and paint). I believe that in a goverment macro perspective of the construction industry, the powers that are present want to “clean up” the business of remodeling and small business renovators, handymen, and service people.
Number one, it is a costly thing to collect taxes, licenses, and permits from the hundreds of thousands of “little guys” and mom and pop contractors, so the EPA found a way to choke off the business to these individuals by imposing huge fines (up to $37,500 per offense) if any paid person (calling themselves a contractor or not, any person receiving compensation of any kind for services rendered) disturbs more than 6 square feet of area in a home to do ANY renovation in any fashion and is not registered, certified and trained to test for lead paint and then contain it by a long list of methods spelled out by this rule.
Secondly, the cost to the homeowner of pre-1979 homes containing lead paint will be staggering. It makes the homes containing lead paint immediately worth less to the housing market (potential buyers will have to consider the huge cost of fix up on these homes compared to a non lead paint home).
Thirdly, as a small contractor myself, I may be an unemployed person if I cannot sell enough windows and doors and remodeling services to keep MY doors open because my customers cannot afford the high cost of the renovations anymore. That will cost us all when tens of thousands of small businesses close and have to collect unemployment benefits, lose their homes, drop health care insurance for employees, etc.
